I’ve been fielding a lot of complaints lately from people who have been given bogus information concerning a fictitious Canadian pardon deadline . The sales routine goes something like this:
“Sign up now and we can guarantee your pardon will not be affect by the deadline. If you don’t, be warned and afraid because time is running out. The deadline to get a pardon is fast approaching so you’d better get started. I just need your credit card number.”
This is simply not true so allow me to put these insincere sales tactics to rest. The following points should clear up any misunderstanding about a supposed deadline to get a pardon.
- First and foremost: a private company cannot grandfather you into the pardon program.
- There is no need to be grandfathered anyway. The changes proposed by the Conservative government have already taken effect.
- Pardons are not being eliminated. What happened was the government changed the name of the application from a “pardon” to a “record suspension”.
- A pardon and a record suspension are exactly the same thing.
Anyone giving you information that contradicts the above is either uninformed or providing you with misleading information just to make a sale.
Please be careful. There are a lot of people selling pardon services these days and very few who know anything about pardons, let alone enough to call themselves experts.

National Pardon Center would be the company you are looking for which is good news since you happen to have found our website already. Doing it on your own is pretty tricky but not impossible.

I was to the commissionaire’s office in Barrie, because I’m looking for a job now and feared my ipmaired driving record from 2009 would come up in a check. The woman there told me it would cost a mnimum of 1600$ to do. My friend, an OPP detective seemed to think it was free. And I stupidly gave an initial 350$ to a pardon’s service, which I quickly realized was bogus and they refunded my money. So much false information! Why isn’t there an actual place for us to find out and why do we hava to pay anything? I’ve already paid for my crime and lost so much. How do I get a record suspension, then? Thanks

I did my own pardon. Although it took some time and money, it was worth not paying the fee to these companies as I was quite capable of doing this myself. They need your information anyways. It’s not complicated. Just get the form guide and follow the prompts.
I agree completely. By all means if you have the time and the initiative there is nothing wrong with doing a pardon on your own. Of course the same can be said about doing your taxes, painting your house, etc. There are several articles on this blog addressing exactly that issue.
