Fees and Surcharges – Criminal Sentencing

Fees and Surcharges

These are not necessarily considered part of a sentence but it is common for courts to charge fees when someone is convicted of a criminal offence. The most common is the Victim Surcharge Fee, which the federal government is trying to make a mandatory part of all criminal convictions.

It’s important to be sure that all fees and surcharges are paid to the court because if they have not been paid they will remain on the court’s books indefinitely and outstanding court fees can cause significant delays when applying for a Pardon / Record Suspension.
